The Host is a 2013 American thriller film directed by Andrew Niccol, written by Niccol and Scott Z. Burns, and starring Ellen Page. The film centers around Melanie Stryder, an employee of the National Park Service who reluctantly agrees to care for The Host, an alien touching down on Earth. Released on March 15th 2013 in U.S. theaters, The Host grossed $151 million worldwide against its $19 million budget and received generally positive reviews from critics who praised the cast's performances as well as the idea behind it. In a mountain forest on Earth, an alien ship appears and an unseen creature attempts to leave the ship. The unseen creature is struck by lightening and alters its shape slightly. Melanie Stryder, an employee of the National Park Service, is hiking in the woods with her dog Jasper when they are attacked by a group of people attempting to abduct them. Melanie flees with Jasper's help just as the attackers are killed by the unseen creature, originally mistook for a bigfoot-type beast by local law enforcement. The next day she wakes up in the hospital to find out that she has been shot in her abdomen and that her wounds have healed miraculously fast. She quickly removes herself from her room before everyone realizes she is gone. The next day, she finds out that her sister, Jamie, is missing. A call by Jamie reveals that the abductors are the souls of the people who were killed by Melanie's dog Jasper. The group decides to keep Melanie alive to get their souls back. They need her to eventually help their leader Iver to get off Earth before his ship explodes because of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) caused by human satellites. The abductors capture Melanie and Jasper; Iver begins transferring his consciousness into Melanie's body through a device installed in her head during surgery for a bullet wound earlier. He does not possess the skills to control Melanie's mind, so he uses hypnotic music broadcast by radio waves to cause part of her mind to enter his own. Melanie eventually learns that Iver is trying to get off Earth before the EMP destroys his ship. She manages to overcome her conditioning and fights Iver in a final confrontation in the forest. In the aftermath, Iver transfers himself from Melanie's body back into his ship which explodes with pieces of molten metal raining down on Earth. In a deleted scene from the film, three spacecraft appear above Earth and carry out a simultaneous attack on major cities with EMP-sized weapons that destroy human civilization in a matter of hours. Melanie and Jasper take shelter in a cave. The radio, which Iver had turned off, is heard playing Melanie's favorite song. When she hears it, she falls unconscious and wakes up in the hospital to find out that she has been there for three weeks. She receives a call from her stepfather who tells her that Jamie is alive and well and that her mother is on her way back home to Minnesota after missing the catastrophe by about an hour. As Melanie gets ready to leave for work for the first time since the attack, she hears Jasper barking at something; she runs out of the cabin and sees a dog-like creature run across the road into a forest as Jasper chases after it. cfa1e77820
