This is one of the most talked about films of 2016, but what exactly is this story about? The film starts with the lead character (Prem) waking up in a strange city (Ajab), with no recollection of his past. He must find his way back to the city he recognises as home (Pune), where he hopes to reunite with his family. The film follows Prem’s odyssey over four continents, encountering an array of colourful characters on his long journey back. Prem's journey is often surreal and strange, resembling something between a David Lynch movie and an episode of The Twilight Zone. The film takes on a surrealistic tone, in keeping with the unreliable narrator in the story told by Prem. Thought to be an urban legend, the story of Jabab reflects real-life experiences of people who have suffered at the hands of racists, religious bigots and communal elements. The film is written and directed by Varun Aditya Deshmukh, produced by Team Aanand Productions. It is released under the banner of his own production house Aanand Stories. The music for "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" is provided by Jatin-Lalit. The soundtrack contains eleven tracks, which are sung by Kailash Kher, Shreya Ghoshal, Papon, Arjit Singh, Shashank Tiwari & Tarun Bhasin. The music is composed by Jatin-Lalit.The film had its first official screening on 18 December 2016 at the St Xavier's College in Mumbai. The second official screening was held on 19 December 2016 at the Zee Studios in Nagpur with the full star cast present. A national premiere of the film was held at Vasant Theatre in Mumbai on 12 January 2017. The film was subsequently screened at multiple cities in India, but due to several political agitations against the film’s release, the film was banned in certain states of India. The film faced controversies. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) didn’t give it a theatrical release certificate because the makers refused to acknowledge that it is based on true events, resulting in states like Maharashtra banning its screening. This led to filmmakers Varun Aditya Deshmukh and Zee Studios filing a petition against the state government; they also appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his intervention.
